Green Initiatives

Even though the ceramic industry does not create hazardous byproducts, protecting the environment from any harmful waste material of the factory’s production process encouraged the sustainability team to start a number of initiatives that not only save precious resources of the country but also that it is cost effective and to keep the environment from harm’s way. The focus was therefore to incorporate the 3 Rs – Reduce, Reuse and Recycle into all sections of the industry.

Some of the initiatives include:

(a) Using energy efficient technology,

(b) Reusing treated water,

(c) Harvesting rain-water,

(d) Reusing utility water, and

(e) Recovering heat for reuse.

At PCIL, waste-water from the ETP is reused for production as also other types of uses like daily toilet flushing of 1700 workers in the premises, gardening, washing/cleaning of transport and other heavy equipment, etc, thus saving almost 10 million litres of fresh

underground water per year. The 250,000 square feet roof top rain water harvesting system is used for washing and other purposes, saving approximately 8 million litres of fresh underground water every year.
